Roles can be thought of as groups of users, particularly for the purpose of granting permissions. Three roles exist in every Wagn: Anyone and Anyone signed in, and Administrator. Users have all of the permissions of all of the roles that they have been assigned to (plus either the Anyone role or the Anyone signed in role, depending on whether they are signed in or not).
Additional roles can be created, renamed and removed just like any other card. Administrators assign users to roles using the check boxes in the Options tab of a user's card, and grant abilities to those roles on a special Global permissions page.
